Miller-McCune

Great research and great writing.

Of course, I like reading the hard copy of the magazine. I just can’t relax as much reading something online as I can reading a paper copy.

Here’s hoping magazines don’t go away anytime soon.

As print slowly dwindles…

Here’s an interesting blog: Newspaper Death Watch.

As newspapers go, so goes the world of print media. Although…I’m much more of a magazine person. (Just ask my mail carrier.)

I still believe there’s a role for print media–especially books and magazines. And I freely admit to my antediluvian beliefs in this regard. I’ll be sad, for many reasons, if they’re proven incorrect.

Creating a social media strategy…

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

In looking for information about how to set create a social media strategy, I found this great entry on Beth’s Blog: Creating your organization’s social media strategy map.

The target market is non-profits but I think it works for any business, especially small businesses with limited resources.

The highlights:

  1. Identify objectives
  2. Identify the audience
  3. Integrate
  4. Culture change
  5. Capacity
  6. Tactics and tools
  7. Measurement
  8. Experiment

Limited worldview…

Anyone watching or listening to the news these days will regularly hear the names of a few countries other than the U.S.  At most about 10 these days, and most of those are in one geographic region.

Yet…there are almost 200 countries on this planet. There are even some places we all think about as countries that are actually territories or colonies. Most of them can easily be added to list of places we never hear about.

195 countries according to the U.S. State Department

192 members of the United Nations

It’s interesting that in this environment, with happenings around the world so important in so many ways, that 95% of the countries in the world and people who live in them are simply invisible to us.

The right amount of information…

Here’s a lesson in providing the right amount and type of information…

This morning I called the weather, for the obvious reason–to get the temperature and general weather conditions. I got the latter, plus yesterday’s temperature and how it related to the average temperature on April 1, the marine forecast, and tomorrow’s predicted weather. The one thing they never said was the temperature. To be fair, they usually do. But not this morning. It really is a key piece of information to be imparted and should be the first thing they say. Don’t you think that’s a major reason people call this number?

Since I didn’t get what I needed (I called a second time, in case I’d spaced out for the moment they gave the temp), I called the phone number for time (hours and minutes, not the magazine). No matter what, they always give you exactly what it was you thought you’d get when you called. No comparisons to what the time is supposed to be, how it compares to the average time, or how time is effected by your altitude and the pull of gravity. Just the facts. Plus…they give you the temperature. It’s a little extra add on that today especially I appreciate.
