Ringing in the new decade…

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Apparently, a lot of people are glad to see the aughts go away. According to the Pew Research Center, this was the worst decade in 50 years.

Technology bright spots:

  • 69% think cell phones are a change for the better
  • 65% think the internet and email are changes for the better

Interestingly:

  • 40% think that more people getting tattoos is a change for the worse
  • 45% think that more people getting tattoos hasn’t made a difference

Rehashing…

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I get the irony of linking to this article, but I loved it: Meet the rehashed, repeated, warmed over web

It begins…”Stop me if you’ve read this one before. Actually, stop me if you’ve read anything at all original on the Web over the last year. Odds are whatever you did read was copied or repeated from someone else, who took it from someone else, who took it … and so on and so on.”

The night before christmas…

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

For those in a Christmas mood (and I know not everyone is or even needs to be) and aren’t working too hard today (and I know some people are by choice or necessity), here’s a fun diversion: the Official NORAD Santa Tracker

I hope this brings a little holiday cheer to everyone!

Holly jolly holidays…

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The top 25 holiday songs this year, according to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

My faves:

  • # 8 Jingle Bell Rock
  • #13 Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
  • #23 Carol of the Bells
  • #24 Wonderful Christmastime

What I believe is missing:

  • All I Want for Christmas is You
  • Last Christmas
  • Santa Baby

Happy holidays to you and yours!

Setting priorities…

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

There are all sorts of things on my to-do list. Many of which I actively avoid. Sound familiar?

Here’s a great model from Robert Middleton’s More Clients Blog on prioritizing projects and time.

A couple items from my Don’t Like to Do and Avoid column:

  • follow-up calls and email
  • public relations
  • creating and actually following a marketing plan

I’m looking forward to some rejiggering and delegating in the new year!

Advice on writing email…

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

From the Boston Globe: To ensure prompt replies, build a better e-mail.

Key points:

  • Topical subject line
  • Professional and clear reply to email address
  • Emphasize connections or referrals
  • Be brief (full disclosure: I have a hard time with this one)
  • Make the call to action apparent
  • Attach and paste
  • Complete contact information
